Community Profile

The Township of North Huron is a vibrant community just 1 hour west of Waterloo and 1 ½ hours north of London. Located within Huron County and less than a half hour drive from the sandy shores of Lake Huron, North Huron is a community with strong agricultural and rural roots. We boast excellent farmland, engaged volunteer groups, beautiful and rugged landscapes, and modern and productive agricultural businesses.

Residents and visitors of North Huron appreciate and enjoy a wide range of services with a small, hometown appeal. We offer a desired quality of life and value our history and hometown atmosphere. North Huron is comprised of the Village of Blyth, the Township of East Wawanosh, and the Town of Wingham. Our business community is progressive, global and growing.

The population of North Huron has grown by 4% since 2011. Over the same time period, Huron County has grown by 6% and Ontario by 12.3%. As the cost of living increases and there is more out migration from larger urban centers, it is anticipated that townships like North Huron will see an increased rate of population growth. A good example of this is that Toronto census metropolitan area has grown in population by 12.3% since 2011, yet the nearby Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo and Oshawa census metropolitan areas in that same time have grown by 22.5% and 18.1% respectively. Eventually, this out migration will extend to places like North Huron.

There was a shift towards higher household incomes from the 2016 to 2021 census in North Huron. The household incomes from the census are recorded a year before the census is released, so the actual values are from 2015 and 2020. In 2015, 60% of the North Huron households were earning more than 50,000 annually, whereas that increased to 70% in 2020. In 2015, 36% of households earned between 50,000 to 100,000 annually, and that number remained similar at 37% in 2020. Looking at the percent of households earning over 100,000 annually, it went from 24% in 2015 to 33% in 2020.

When sorting employees by occupation, Sales & Service jobs lead employment at 23% of the workforce, followed by Trade & Transport (including Equipment Operators) at 17% and Business, Finance & Administration at 12%.
