Steps to become an Instructor/Lifeguard

The Lifesaving Society's training programs provide knowledge and skills for people to save themselves or others in an aquatic emergency. The courses below are the steps and the pre-requisites required to become an Instructor Lifeguard. A Lifeguard gains life skills such as communication, conflict resolution, responsibility and team work. If you have any questions about advanced courses please call (519)357-1208 ext.323.

Lifesaving Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid/CPR B

Pre-Requisites: 13 years old prior to the exam date. This course is offered in the summer or fall.

Develop physical fitness, decision-making and judgement skills for water rescues. Spinal injury management techniques are also covered.

Lifesaving Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid/CPR C

Pre-Requisites: 14 years old, Bronze Medallion & Emergency First Aid/CPR B. This course is offered in the summer or fall.

Teaches an understanding of the water-rescues, tows and carries, defense methods and releases, emergency procedures, teamwork, special equipment use and spinal injury management techniques.

Lifesaving Assistant Learn to Swim Instructors 

Pre-Requisites: 14 years old by end of course, Bronze Cross. This course is offered in the fall or winter.

Through classroom learning and in-water practice candidates learn how to assist instructors with swimming lessons. Topics include: basic principles of learning and teaching swimming strokes, skills and safety supervision. Candidates are required to do 18 hours of volunteer time during a swimming lesson session. Lifesaving Learn to Swim Instructors

Pre-Requisites: 15 years old by the end of the course, Lifesaving Assistant Instructors, Bronze Cross. This course is offered in the winter or spring.

This course prepares candidates to teach and evaluate basic swim strokes and skills for infants, children teens and adults. Topics include: teaching methods, planning skills, stroke development drills and corrective techniques. Once certified apply to join our team!

Lifesaving National Lifeguard

Pre-Requisites: 15 years old, Bronze Cross & Standard First Aid/CPR C. This course is offered in the winter, spring or summer.

Learn teamwork, leadership, emergency procedures and accident prevention. This is the standard guarding certificate across Canada. Once certified apply to join our team!

Lifesaving National Lifeguard Recert

To remain current in their qualifications, lifeguards are legally required to re-certify their qualifications every two years. This clinic will update lifeguards on the latest developments in training techniques and statistical research.

Lifesaving Standard First Aid/CPR C Recert

To remain current in their qualifications, general workplaces require a recertification every 3 years. Aquatic staff may be require a recertification more frequently.

Important Information for Advanced Courses

Please check course pre-requisites before registering. 100% Attendance and participation is required for all Advanced Courses.  Exceptions cannot be made.

What to bring to all courses: original certification of required pre-requisites, proof of age,

bathing suit and towels(s).

Recommended for all courses: comfortable clothing, notebook, pen/pencils, snacks/meals and water bottle. Course manuals and materials will be handed out on the first day of the course.
