NHWCC Aquatic Centre follows the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Program and offers swimming lessons for all ages and abilities.


Spring 2025 Registration opens Thursday, March 6 at 8:30 a.m.

2 ways to register: 

In-person or by phone 519-357-1208 ext. 321, Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex.

Online payments will be made possible through OptionPay, the township's provider for online payments.


The Centre has a Family Accessible Change room. During the winter months, review the Winter Closures before planning your visit.

Notes:

  • All swim lessons take place in the Aquatic Centre at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex.
  • All instructors are certified Lifesaving Society Swim Instructors.
  • On the first lesson, please bring your child's previous progress card (if applicable).
  • Goggles are recommended for swimmers in Swimmer 5 and beyond.
  • Young swimmers who are not toilet trained must wear a swim diaper.  They are available for purchase in the Guard Office.
  • Lessons cancelled due to pool fouling (See What happens if there is an accident in the pool? section for more details)  or inclement weather will be rescheduled or refunded according to the Refund and Cancellations Policy approved by Council.
  • For Private lessons:
    • If your child is repeating a level, please speak with the instructor to set-out any special goals that are to be accomplished this session.
    • Lessons that are missed or requested to be rescheduled by the participant will be subject to an additional cost of $30 per lesson.

Types of Swimming Lessons

Public Swimming Lessons

Spring Swim Lesson Schedule:

Private Swimming Lessons

Private lessons are open to all ages & swim levels with an emphasis on providing an opportunity for participants to improve strokes and skills, build endurance, or learn to swim.  They are best suited for participants who have a few skills remaining to complete a level, those looking for smaller class sizes, or families requiring one-to-one support. 

Swimmers will get 5 lessons of 30-minutes each with a certified swimming instructor. Single 30-minute lesson sessions are also available by request.

Private lessons provide an opportunity for participants to improve strokes and skills, build endurance, or learn to swim.  They are best suited for participants who have a few skills remaining to complete a level, desire smaller class size, or one-on-one support.

 

Mondays: April 7 to May 12, 2025, skip April 21 - 4:45 p.m., 5:15 p.m

Thursdays: April 10 to May 8, 2025  - 4:45 p.m., 5:15 p.m., 5:45 p.m. 

 

Semi-Private Swimming Lessons

Semi-Private lessons are open to all ages & swim levels with an emphasis on providing an opportunity for participants to improve strokes and skills, build endurance, or learn to swim.  They are best suited for participants who have a few skills remaining to complete a level, those looking for smaller class sizes, or families requiring one-to-one support. 

Swimmers will get 5 lessons of 30-minutes each with a certified swimming instructor. Single 30-minute lesson sessions are also available by request.

Semi-private lessons are an option for 2-3 swimmers of similar ages and levels who would benefit from small group lessons. Please note it is the parent's/guardian’s responsibility to find the other swimmers. Swimmers may be in the same level or no more than one level apart.

 

Mondays: April 7 to May 12, 2025, skip April 21 - 4:45 p.m., 5:15 p.m., 

Thursdays: April 10 to May 8, 2025  - 5:45 p.m., 6:15 p.m.

 

Swim for Life Levels

Parent and Tot (4-36 months) 

Parent & Tot 1 (4-12 months)

With a caregiver, the child will explore the water through buoyancy, movement skills, introduction to PFD’s and entries. Caregivers will learn how to help their child play in the water with comfort and confidence. 

 

Tuesdays: April 8 to May 27, 2025 -  4:45-5:15 p.m.

Wednesdays: April 9 to May 28, 2025 - 4:45-5:15 p.m.

Saturdays: April 12 to May 31, 2025 - 10:00-10:30 a.m.

Parent & Tot 2 (12-24 months)

With a caregiver, the child will perform assisted from and back floats, learn how to travel at the surface by kicking, introduction to entries with a PFD. This level teaches children to get their face wet and blow bubbles.

 

Tuesdays: April 8 to May 27, 2025  -  5:15-5:45 p.m.

Wednesdays:April 9 to May 28, 2025 - 5:15-5:45 p.m.

Saturdays: JApril 12 to May 31, 2025 - 9:30-10:00 a.m.

Parent & Tot 3 (24-36 months)

With a caregiver, the child will jump into the water with assistance, learn to hold their breath and open their eyes under water, and kick on front and back which will provide the building blocks for stroke development. 

 

Tuesdays: April 8 to May 27, 2025  -  5:15-5:45 p.m.

Wednesdays: April 9 to May 28, 2025 - 5:15-5:45 p.m.

Saturdays: April 12 to May 31, 2025 - 9:30-10:00 a.m.

Preschool Levels (3-5 years)

Preschool A (3-5 years)

Preschoolers develop a foundation of water skills with the instructors. Swimmers jump into chest-deep water assisted. Floating on front and back, and back glides with assistance for 3 seconds.

 

Tuesdays: April 8 to May 27, 2025  - 4:45-5:15 p.m.

Wednesdays: April 9 to May 28, 2025 -4:45-5:15 p.m.

Saturdays: April 12 to May 31, 2025 - 9:30-10:00 a.m. or 10:00-10:30 a.m. 

Preschool B (3-5 years)

Preschoolers jump into chest-deep water and get in and get out wearing a PFD. They submerge and exhale under water. They glide on front and back 3m and with a buoyant aid will flutter kick on back 5m. Fitness swim 2—4m unassisted. 

 

Tuesdays: April 8 to May 27, 2025  - 5:15-5:45 p.m.

Wednesdays: April 9 to May 28, 2025 -5:15-5:45 p.m.

Saturdays: April 12 to May 31, 2025- 9:00-9:30 a.m. or 10:30-11:00 a.m. 

Preschool C (3-5 years)

Preschoolers try both a jump and a side roll into deep water while wearing a PFD. They recover objects from the bottom in waist-deep water. They work on kicking and gliding through the water on front and back unassisted. Fitness swim is 7—9m unassisted.

 

Tuesdays: April 8 to May 27, 2025  - 5:45-6:15 p.m.

Wednesdays: April 9 to May 28, 2025 -5:45-6:15 p.m.

Saturdays: April 12 to May 31, 2025 - 9:00-9:30 a.m. 

Preschool D (3-5 years)

Preschoolers learn independent jumps into deep water and exit. They open their eyes under water and recover objects from chest-deep water. Front crawl is introduced at this level and for 2—3m unassisted. Fitness swim is 7—9m unassisted.

 

Tuesdays: April 8 to May 27, 2025  - 5:45-6:15 p.m.

Wednesdays: April 9 to May 28, 2025 -5:45-6:15 p.m.

Saturdays: April 12 to May 31, 2025 - 9:00-9:30 a.m. 

Preschool E (3-5 years)

Preschoolers build on deep water skills by demonstrating a forward roll entry with a PFD. They develop endurance by holding their breath under water for up to 10 sec. Interval training and whip kick is introduced at this level. Fitness swim 10—12m unassisted.

 

Fall Session: Not offered.

Swimmer Levels (6 years and up)

Swimmer 1

Beginners become comfortable jumping into the water with and without a personal flotation device. They open their eyes, exhale, and hold their breath underwater. They work on floats, glides, and kicking on front and back. 

 

Tuesdays: April 8 to May 27, 2025  - 5:45-6:15 p.m.

Wednesdays: April 9 to May 28, 2025 -5:45-6:15 p.m.

Saturdays: April 12 to May 31, 2025 - 10:30-11:00 a.m. 

Swimmer 2

Advanced beginners jump into deeper water and become comfortable falling sideways into the water wearing a personal flotation device. Swimmers support themselves at the surface without an aid and recover an object in chest-deep water. Fitness swim is 10—15m.

 

Tuesdays: April 8 to May 27, 2025  - 6:15-6:45 p.m.

Wednesdays: April 9 to May 28, 2025 -6:15-6:45 p.m.

Saturdays: April 12 to May 31, 2025 - 10:30-11:00 a.m. 

Swimmer 3

Swimmers develop front and back crawl strokes, and explore whip kick in a vertical position. Swimmers tread water for up to 30 sec and learn to transition from front to back flutter kick. Fitness swim is 20—25m.  

 

Tuesdays: April 8 to May 27, 2025  - 6:15-6:45 p.m.

Wednesdays: April 9 to May 28, 2025 -6:15-6:45 p.m.

Saturdays: April 12 to May 31, 2025 - 10:30-11:00 a.m. 

Swimmer 4

Swimmers work towards stride dives and standing dives into deep water. They improve the front crawl, back crawl, and whip kick. Swimmers are introduced to a 3m underwater swim. Fitness swim is 50m. 

 

Tuesdays: April 8 to May 27, 2025  - 6:15-7:00 p.m.

Wednesdays: April 9 to May 28, 2025 -6:15-7:00 p.m.

Saturdays: April 12 to May 31, 2025 - 9:45-10:30 a.m. 

Swimmer 5

Junior swimmers shallow dive into deep water and perform in-water back somersaults. They achieve the Canadian Swim to Survive Standard: roll into deep water, tread 1 min, and swim 50m. Swimmers continue to develop front and back crawl while breaststroke skills are introduced. Fitness swim is 100m. 

 

Tuesdays: April 8 to May 27, 2025  - 6:15-7:00 p.m.

Wednesdays: April 9 to May 28, 2025 -6:15-7:00 p.m.

Saturdays: April 12 to May 31, 2025 - 9:45-10:30 a.m. 

Swimmer 6

Intermediate swimmers increase efficiency in front crawl, back crawl, and work to develop breaststroke skills. They are introduced to stride entries, scissor kick, and vertical dolphin kick. They also develop strength and power by performing front and back crawl sprints. Fitness swim is 150m. 

 

Tuesdays: April 8 to May 27, 2025  - 5:30-6:15 p.m.

Wednesdays: April 9 to May 28, 2025 -5:30-6:15 p.m.

Saturdays: April 12 to May 31, 2025- 9:00-9:45 a.m. 

Swimmer 7

Intermediate swimmers master dolphin kick, diving off of blocks and eggbeater. They are introduced to sculling and continue to maximize efficiency in front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke. Fitness swim is 300m. 

 

Tuesdays: April 8 to May 27, 2025  - 5:30-6:15 p.m.

Wednesdays: April 9 to May 28, 2025 -5:30-6:15 p.m.

Saturdays: April 12 to May 31, 2025 - 9:00-9:45 a.m. 

Swimmer 8

Swimmers rise to the challenge of advanced aquatic skills including head and foot first surface dives and a 25m obstacle swim. First aid focuses on assessment of conscious victims, contacting EMS and treatment for bleeding. They swim lengths of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. Fitness swim is 350m. 

 

Tuesdays: April 8 to May 27, 2025  - 4:45-5:15 p.m.

Wednesdays: April 9 to May 28, 2025 -4:45-5:15 p.m.

Saturdays: April 12 to May 31, 2025 - 11:00-11:45 a.m. 

Swimmer 9

Swimmers continue stroke development with 75m swims of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke. Lifesaving skills include a rescue with a buoyant aid and a timed object support. First aid focuses on assessment of unconscious victims, treatment of victims in shock and obstructed airway procedures. Fitness swim is 500m. 

 

Tuesdays: April 8 to May 27, 2025  - 4:45-5:15 p.m.

Wednesdays: April 9 to May 28, 2025 -4:45-5:15 p.m.

Saturdays: April 12 to May 31, 2025 - 11:00-11:45 a.m. 

Swimmer 10

Advanced Swimmers develop each stroke over 100m. They also learn lifesaving skills such as entries with aids, and removals of unconscious victims. First aid focuses on treatment of victims with bone and joint injuries, and respiratory emergencies. Swimming drills develop a strong lifesaving foundation. Fitness swim is 600m.

Wednesdays: April 9 to May 28, 2025 -4:45-5:15 p.m.

Saturdays: April 12 to May 31, 2025- 11:00-11:45 a.m.

Junior Lifeguard Club

The Junior Lifeguard Club (JLC) offers a unique aquatic alternative to traditional test-sheet-based aquatic programs and is independent of traditional award progressions. JLC is for quick learners and those between levels or programs who thrive in an energetic learning environment. Members can be any age between 8 and 15 years. 

The JLC stresses fun and aquatic skill development based on personal best achievement. Building on skills they already have, JLC members work to develop and improve swimming and other aquatic skills with emphasis on: swim and lifesaving knowledge, leadership and teamwork, community education, competition and personal fitness.

Personal Best Swim Club

Swimmers strive for their own personal best while they work to build endurance, learn new swimming skills, and improve swimming strokes.  Individual progress will be tracked weekly and individual achievements will be recognized at the end of the session. 

A great introduction to competitive swimming! Swimmers will complete the facility swim test on the first night; from there groups will be divided into two swimming groups (shallow and deep).

Goggles are recommended; they are available for purchase in the lifeguard office.

Frequently asked questions

What if the level I want is full?

If the program you are looking for is full, place your child on the waitlist.  If there is pool space and an instructor available, every attempt will be made to move children from the waitlist to the desired class and/or create another class for that level.

What happens if I miss a lesson?

Every attempt will be made to reschedule any public or private swimming lessons cancelled by the aquatic department due to unforeseen circumstances. Public lessons missed by the participant will not be rescheduled. Any private lessons that are missed by the participant will be made up for an additional cost of $30 per lesson.

How do refunds work?

Refunds will be handled according to the Refund and Cancellation Policy approved by Council.

What happens if there's an accident in the pool?

Pool fouling cause the pool to be closed. The pool will be closed a minimum of 1 hour for formed fecal matter and vomit and a minimum of 4 hours of diarrhea. Please help us keep our pool germ free by:
  • Not swimming if you are unwell or have diarrhea.
  • Feeding young children at least one hour before swimming.
  • Taking your children to the bathroom before entering the pool, and frequently during the swim
If your children are not toileted trained, they must wear an approved swim diaper that are for sale in the Guard Office.
